Old 97's Information
Old 97's is a Dallas, Texas-based alternative country band. They were early adopters of the alt-country movement in the mid-to-late 1990s, before transitioning to a power-pop sound in the 2000s. They formed in 1993 and have since released twelve studio albums, two full extended plays, one live album, and two full extended plays sharing split duty on another. Philip Peeples (drums and backing vocals), Ken Bethea (lead guitar, backing, and lead vocals), Murry Hammond (bass guitar, lead vocals, and acoustic guitar), and Rhett Miller make up the current configuration of the band (lead vocals and rhythm guitar).
After releasing their debut album, Hitchhike to Rhome, in 1994 and a split EP with neighboring Dallas band Funland, Stoned / Garage Sale, on Idol Records in 1995, Old 97's toured the country. They attracted Bloodshot Records' attention in Chicago and were signed to record their second album. Many of the band's songs contain references to Texas and New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
The Break-Up, Ed, Slither, Clay Pigeons, Veronica Mars, Scrubs, Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, and a few more have all featured their music. Although they claim never to prepare their performance, the Old 97's have been praised as a fantastic live band.
Too Far to Care: Expanded Edition (2012), The Grand Theatre, Volume One (2010), The Grand Theatre, Volume Two (2011), Old 97's & Waylon Jennings (2013), Most Messed Up (2014), Graveyard Whistling (2017), Love the Holidays (2018), Twelfth (2020), and others are among the band's releases.
