New West Symphony Information
As a standout professional regional symphony orchestra, the New West Symphony showcases its talent in and around the Greater Los Angeles Area. Established in 1995, the orchestra is composed of top-tier professionals, carefully selected from the pool of exceptionally skilled classical musicians residing and working in the Los Angeles area. Many of these musicians also contribute their expertise to other local orchestras and serve as session musicians for various entertainment industries.
The Ventura County Symphony and the Conejo Symphony Orchestra both went out of business in 1995, so 1995, the symphony was formed to take their place. Founder Boris Brott's programming focused on symphonic works from the 19th and 20th centuries. Musicians were asked to take wage cutbacks to assist the New West in sustaining a financial crisis that hit in 2008.
After conducting the orchestra as an emergency substitute in January 2011 and again for scheduled concerts in April 2012, Marcelo Lehninger was appointed by the orchestra in May 2012. After the 30th of September 2012, Lehninger was named music director. Lehninger departed in 2016 after three seasons. The New West Symphony welcomed Michael Christie, a Grammy Award winner, as its new music director in December 2018.
