Nashville Symphony Information
The Nashville Symphony is a symphony orchestra that is based in Nashville, Tennessee, that performs 140 concerts annually. It is a group of professional and amateur musicians who established an orchestral ensemble in Nashville. Music directors who have served the Nashville Symphony since its inception include William Strickland, Guy Taylor, Willis Page, Thor Johnson, Michael Charry, Kenneth Schermerhorn, Leonard Slatkin, and currently, Giancarlo Guerrero since 2009.
The Nashville Symphony has made more than 30 recordings for the Naxos label since 2000, with several of their CDs garnering thirteen Grammy Awards and 24 Grammy Awards nominations. An integral part of the Symphony's mission is music education. They have offered free concerts for Nashville-area students since the 1970s. The orchestra has also launched the Accelerando program recently. The program was designed to create opportunities for young musicians, mostly from ethnic communities, that are underrepresented in American orchestras. The Andrew W.Mellon Foundation funds the Accelerando program.
Recordings that are done by the Nashville Symphony orchestra include Beethoven: Missa Solemnis (2004), Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 (1996), Bernstein: West Side Story: The Original Score (2002), Carter (2004), Ives: Symphony No. 2 (2000), and several others. In September 2006, The Nashville Symphony opened the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. The project cost $123.5 million with the center, including Laura Turner Concert Hall.
