Mura Masa Information
Mura Masa (April 5, 1996) is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and electronic music producer. His original name is Alex Crossan, whereas Mura Masa is his stage name. Crossan was born and grew up in Guernsey. He learned to drum, guitar, and bass at an early age and started playing in local hardcore, punk, gospel, and deathcore bands. Crossan decided to begin his self-producing career when he was just 15. He used to search for samples on YouTube as well as other stuff on the internet regarding his passion.
Crossan started taking interest in electronic music after he learned about Hudson Mohawke. He streamed music on YouTube, discovering SBTRKT, James Blake, and Cashmere Cat and was influenced by The Smiths and Gorillaz to learn multiple instruments and write music too. At the age of 16, he started making electronic songs using a digital audio workstation, “Ableton Live.” He uploaded all of his songs to Soundcloud under his stage name Mura Masa.
Crossan started his official career in 2014 when he posted a mixtape on Soundcloud called “Soundtrack To a Death.” German label, Jakarta Records, afterward distributed this mixtape around the globe.
Crossed released his debut EP in April 2015 called “Someday Somewhere.” “Firefly” was the leading track of this release. It was also chosen to be in the “In New Music We Trust” playlist at BBC Radio 1. He released his debut self-titled album “Mura Masa” on July 14, 2017. The album also debuted at no.192 on the US Billboard 200 and number 19 on the UK Albums Chart.
He has won two awards so far in his music career, including Grammy Awards 2019 for “Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical” and UK Music Video Awards in 2017 for the category “Best Live Session.”
