Montgomery Symphony Orchestra Information
The Montgomery Symphony Orchestra is based in Montgomery, Alabama, and was founded in 1976. The Orchestra was originally a Parks and Recreation Department project by the city, with a part-time director and thirty volunteer musicians. A board of directors now governs the symphony. The Montgomery Symphony Orchestra began regular performances in the Davis Theater in 1988. At that time, the venue was newly renovated and located in downtown Montgomery.
The 1994 performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is said to be the Orchestra's most formidable effort. It involved nearly 85 instrumentalists and 200 plus singers. Currently, Thomas Hinds is the full-time director of the symphony. There are two artists in residence who's job is to serve as principal cellist and concertmaster. Every alternate year, the fellowships start. In 2013, it was held by violinist Mr. Robin Scott (2012-2013) and cellist Ms. Ahrim Kim (2013-2014), a married couple.
The Montgomery Symphony Orchestra had about seventy-five members in 2007. It presented eight concerts during the 2006-07 season, accompanied by some educational programs and touring central Alabama. The Orchestra has been offering high-quality musical programs for nearly 75 years now. The Orchestra also sponsors the Montgomery Youth Orchestra. Each year, the Orchestra offers four local concerts free of charge.
