Margaret Leslie “Molly” Johnson (1959) is a Canadian jazz and pop singer and songwriter. She was born in Toronto, Ontario. She started her career as a child and received formal training from the National Ballet School and the Banff School of Fine Arts. Her brother, Clark Johnson, an actor and director, and her sister, Taborah Johnson, an actor and singer, are also notable Canadian performers. She started her professional career in the mid-1960s.
Johnson had started fronting a disco band called, A Chocolate Affair while she was just 17. She also has been the lead vocalist for two bands, including Infidels in the 1990s and Alta Moda in the 1980s. During the 1980s, Johnson performed as a backing vocalist with the Toronto group Breeding Ground. She performed the song “The Best We Both Can Be” in 1989 for Babar: The Movie. She established an annual concert series beginning in 1993 called the Kumbaya Festival. It was established as a benefit for Canadian charities that were working around AIDS and HIV.
Johnson released her self-titled debut album, Molly Johnson, in 2000. It was released through Oasis Entertainment. Other albums released by her include Another Day (2002), Messin’ Around (2006), Lucky (2008), The Molly Johnson Songbook (2011), Because of Billie (2014), and Meaning to Tell Ya (2018).
