Mitch Ryder Information
Mitch Ryder (February 26, 1945) is an American musician. He was born in Hamtramck, Michigan. When Ryder was a senior at Warren High School, he put together the band Tempest, which got considerable attention after performing at The Village, a Detroit soul music bar. Ryder then led a band called Billy Lee & The Rivieras, but they were only successful once they connected with Bob Crewe, a songwriter and record producer.
After seeing "Mitch Ryder" in the New York City phone book, he decided to use that as his stage name and rebrand his band as "Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels." For his DynoVoice Records and New Voice labels, they released a string of hits in the mid-to late-'60s, including the Top 4-peaking "Devil with a Blue Dress On" in 1964, the Top 10-charting "Jenny Take a Ride!" in 1965, and the Top 6-peaking "Sock It to Me, Baby!" in 1967.
Members of the Detroit Wheels included drummer John Badanjek, lead guitarist Mark Manko, rhythm guitarist Joe Kubert (not to be confused with comic book artist Joe Kubert), lead guitarist Jim McCarty (not to be confused with Yardbirds drummer Jim McCarty), and bassist Jim McAllister. In 1967, in Cleveland, Ohio, on a local TV show called Upbeat, Ryder and Otis Redding played "Knock On Wood" together.
