Sam Cantor of Minor Moon creates tunes that take you on a journey. Tethers (out March 26, 2021) is the culmination of three albums. The Chicago-based musician mined the pastoral and rollicking sounds of the cosmic country for contemplative and thrilling songwriting, conjuring up engaging Neil Young grooves, eye-opening atmospherics, and a healthy dose of Midwestern twang.
The album's ten tracks convey an imaginative, trippy sci-fi story about plunging into the depths of inner turmoil and emerging with humility and much-needed perspective. The lead single, "No Lightning Fix," serves as the album's thesis statement. The narrator finds themselves stuck in an abyss, searching for answers or a deeper understanding, on the track, which features warmed-hued guitars and a languid rhythm.
Minor Moon recorded Tethers in bursts at home, at Chicago's Foxhall Studios, and Decade Studios and Public House Sound Recordings with local engineer Dave Vettraino (Lala Lala, Dehd, Deeper). Many hours of unstructured rehearsals with Chicago musicians Colin Drozdoff, Nathan Bojko, Michael Downing, and Konstantine Stebliy resulted in the sessions. The band tweaked the form of each song until it felt natural and energetic.
