Minnesota Orchestra Information
An American orchestra hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Minnesota Orchestra performs classical music. Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis is the usual venue for the Minnesota Orchestra's concerts since its founding in 1903 as the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra announced in December 2018 that Vänskä would step down as music director at the end of the 2021–2022 season. Conductor laureate is the title he assumed.
Due to the Cuban Thaw, the Minnesota Orchestra became the first professional U.S. orchestra to perform in Cuba since the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in 1999 when they made a May 2015 performance in Havana. It made history in August 2018 when it performed in South Africa as the country's first professional orchestra. Jean Sibelius's Violin Concerto was first composed in 1904 and performed for the first time in North America in January 2022 by the orchestra, Vänskä and Elina Vähälä.
Thomas Søndergård made his debut as a guest conductor of the orchestra in December 2021. He made a triumphant comeback in April 2022 for his second guest conducting engagement. The orchestra announced in July 2022 that Søndergård joined the organization as music director beginning with the 2023–2024 season, with a first contract of five seasons.
