Millikin Decatur Symphony Information
The Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra [MDSO] in Decatur, Illinois, has a long history and is unique in that its membership includes faculty, community members, and students.
It is a valuable instructional tool for music professors to have available to join such a group early in their studies. Each university string student must play in the orchestra, and other instruments are employed as space permits.
Since its inception, only four conductors have served as conductors of the Decatur Symphony Orchestra Guild! Each conductor has contributed significantly to the Symphony's promotion and growth.
Music Director and Conductor of the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra and the Millikin Chamber Orchestra is conductor and violist William James McClain. He has performed at prestigious venues in the United States and overseas, including Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Sheremetev Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Maestro McClain is an Associate Professor of Music at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, and is a native of Washington, D.C. The University of Maryland in College Park, Ithaca College, and The University of Texas at Austin all awarded Maestro McClain degrees in orchestral conducting and viola performance.
