Once again, Mile Twelve is on the move. This band is ready to go off after a long pandemic layoff from the first frenetic, dissonant, downbeat on their dazzling new album, Close Enough to Hear. In the first track, "Romulus," the protagonist sways and rages as he contemplates the fleeting nature of his newly established kingdom.
The next piece is "Johnny Oklahoma," a magical realist story about a young man who decides to be shot out of a cannon for the good of his society. These musicians are certainly grappling with some profound concerns raised in recent times. The band's 2019 Album of the Year nomination and 2020 New Artist of the Year Award, and their international reputation as one of the most dynamic groups in contemporary acoustic music, can be heard here, along with their trademark warmth and inventiveness. The song's title track, "Close Enough to Hear," is a minimalistic vision of what we missed during those first few scary months of confinement.
This new CD features an audible presence of something else. Fiddler/singer Ella Jordan and mandolinist Korey Brodsky are the newest additions to the band. Pay attention to the fresh perspective they provide to the band and their ability to meld with Evan Murphy (guitar, vocals), Catherine Bowness (banjo), and Nate Sabat (bass, vocals).
