Mike Cooley Information
John Michael Cooley (September 14, 1966) is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Tuscumbia, Alabama. He is known as a member of the band called Drive-By Truckers. Cooley received his first guitar at eight and spent his time with local bluegrass music to pick up the skill. He formed his first punk-influenced band with Patterson Hood called Adam’s House Cat. In the late 1980s, the group was chosen as the top ten Best Unsigned Band by a Musician contest. After some time, the band disbanded, but Cooley and Hood started to perform as a duo under the name “Virgil Kane.”
Cooley and Hood, later on, formed another band called “Horsepussy.” The band played for a short time and then split for a few years. This happened because Hood moved to Athens, Georgia, to form another band named Drive-By Truckers. It was formed in 1996, where Cooley contributed one song to their debut record entitled “Gangstabilly.”
For Drive-By Truckers, Cooley worked for many albums, including American Band (2016), English Oceans (2014), Go-Go Boots (2011), The Big To-Do (2010), Brighter Than Creation’s Dark (2008), A Blessing and a Curse (2006), The Dirty South (2004), Decoration Day (2003), Southern Rock Opera (2001), Pizza Deliverance (2001), and Gangstabilly (1998).
Cooley finally began his solo career in 2013 and released the first solo live album the same year entitled “The Fool on Every Corner.” The album was recorded at Atlanta’s The EARL.
