Michael Martin Murphey is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter from Texas. He has mastered genres as varied as soft rock, folk, bluegrass, and country. Born in Dallas in 1945, Murphey discovered country music while helping out on his uncle's ranch as a young man. His later sound was heavily influenced by the music of Woody Guthrie, Bob Wills, and Hank Williams, whom he started listening to and writing poetry about.
Murphey began his music career as a teenager playing in Dallas area clubs before relocating to Los Angeles to focus on his music career full-time. When his buddy Michael Nesmith requested him to compose a song for the band The Monkees, it was his first major break.
More than five million copies of the album to which Murphey contributed were eventually sold. The artist's debut album, Geronimo's Cadillac, was released the following year after signing with A&M Records in 1971. Murphey was named the top new songwriter in the nation by Rolling Stone, and the album's lead single peaked at No. 40 on Billboard's pop charts.
