Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra Information
They were all recent college grads in the early 1980s when they had just begun playing in some of the best orchestras in the country. Unfortunately, they discovered that many community orchestras did not prioritize rigorous rehearsals and high-caliber performances at the time. In the summer of 1982, a core group of them got together and decided to form an ensemble dedicated to expertly performing challenging repertoire. The orchestra was instrumental in getting the band started.
Shortly after Labor Day in 1982, the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra began rehearsals. Their debut appearances were at a Lutheran Brotherhood private event and Central Church's Christmas concert. On February 25, 1983, they gave their debut performance as the Central Chamber Orchestra. Performer John Ferguson played Handel's Organ Concerto in B flat, Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 in D and Prokofiev's Classical Symphony.
A group of young college grads formed the orchestra that has now endured for over 40 years and evolved into a genuine intergenerational endeavor. They've improved as a band, but they've also evolved into a community with enough backing to keep doing what they're doing and producing committed board members who take their work seriously.
