Meow Meow Information
Meow Meow, born Melissa Madden Gray, is a cabaret performer known by her stage name Meow Meow. She is an Australian-born actress and dancer who tours internationally, being particularly active in the UK. She created the role of the Maîtresse in the West End musical adaptation of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which took place at the Gielgud Theatre. She also appeared in La Clique at the Roundhouse.
Gray studied at the University of Melbourne, as an undergraduate, where she was a resident student at Trinity College. She earned the degrees of Bachelor Laws and Bachelor of Arts and she is also a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. She has been a soloist as well with the Young Dancers Theatre (Victoria). Gray is famous for performing a style of cabaret that has been called "kamikaze cabaret.” She is renowned for shouting unexpected things, experiencing wardrobe malfunctions, and interacting with audience members.
Meow Meow was named the top ten “Best of Cabaret” by Time Out New York. She has also wowed audiences globally with her unique brand of cabaret along with her performance art exotica. Gray has collaborated with Lance Horne, Anthony Coleman (John Zorn), Iain Grandage, John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig, Shortbus), Rodney Fisher, and many more. Additionally, she has toured with Amanda Palmer and the Dresden Dolls.
Meow has also performed in venues as diverse as Highline Ballroom NYC, Hiro Ballroom NYC, SF MoMA, Sydney Opera House, The Glamour Room Shanghai, the Berlin Philharmonic, Darcelle XV, London's West End, and numerous international arts festivals including Brisbane, Darwin, Queensland Music Festival, Braga Portugal and Festival Estuaire, France. Meow has won countless Australian Green Room Awards along with the New York Franklin Furnace Performance Art Award.
