Martin Taylor (October 20, 1956) is a British jazz guitarist. He was born in Harlow, England. His father, jazz bassist William "Buck" Taylor, who didn't start playing until he was 30, gave him his first instrument when he was four. Buck was a huge fan of the French group Quintette du Hot Club de France, and as a result, adolescent Martin Taylor was greatly influenced by guitarist Django Reinhardt. He began performing with his father's band at the tender age of eight, and at fifteen, he dropped out of school to focus on his career as a singer full-time.
Taylor went on to perform in a slew of bands, summer camps, radio stations, and cruise ships over the next few years. After performing on a cruise once, Count Basie invited him to join his orchestra. During his time spent playing gigs in and around London, he met jazz musician Ike Isaacs, who would later significantly influence his career. Taylor's ability to play jazz harmony and fingerstyle was greatly enhanced by Isaacs, who played with him in duos and taught him.
Taylor began performing as a solo act so that his financial security would be independent of the success of other artists. His charisma and unique approach to the stage paid off, and the shows were a smashing hit. He parted ways with Grappelli's traveling band after a few years. He was able to forge ahead with his solo career thanks to a recording deal with the Scottish label Linn Records. Linn, who specialized in high-end audio equipment, thought Taylor's personal, intricate approach was a perfect fit for their products.
