Mahan Esfahani Information
Mahan Esfahani (1984) is an Iranian-American harpsichordist born in Tehran, Iran. He began the piano with help from his father before exploring his interest in the harpsichord during his teenage. Esfahani studied musicology and history at Stanford University. There he took his first harpsichord lessons along with Elaine Thornburgh and was mentored by George Houle. Esfahani continued his harpsichord studies in Boston with Peter Watchorn.
Esfahani has made his concerto appearances with Britten Sinfonia, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Hamburg Symphony, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta de Navarra, Symfonický orchestra Ceského rozhlasu, Aukland Philharmonia, Melbourne Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In 2009, Esfahani made his Wigmore Hall debut as a concerto soloist with The English Concert. Later the same year, he also made his debut in 30 concerts at The Proms, featuring New Generation Artists. He gave his first-ever solo harpsichord recital in The Proms’ history. In March 2012, Esfahani made his New York debut at the Frick Collection.
Esfahani has released several solo albums throughout his career, including “Mahan Esfahani: Byrd, Bach, Ligeti” (2014), “C.P.E Bach: Wurttemberg Sonatas” (2014), “Rameau: Pieces de clavecin” (2014), Time Present and Time Past” (2015), “Bach: Goldberg Variations,” “The Passing Mesures: Music of the English Virginialists” (2018), “Back: The Toccatas” (2019), and “Musique?” (2020).
