Luwten is the stage name of Dutch musician, singer-songwriter, and producer Tessa Douwstra. In the past, Douwstra’s music was an attempt to shine a light on the introverted, embracing comfort in your solitude. This upcoming album, Draft, tackles a difficult topic: figuring out how to be that person in a group setting. The term Draft is a metaphor for the sense of a gentle wind beneath an open door, and the music within is a gentle reminder to let someone in.
To elaborate on this idea, Luwten weaves electronic sounds with melodic live instrumentation, field recordings, organic noise, and more. Luwten’s heartfelt singing and introspective songwriting let these productions on Draft tell a tale. For example, in the song’s title track, voice memos from close friends and family members of Douwstra are blended to form a collective voice around her own. An individual’s sleeves are rolled up in “sleeveless,” and they are free to roam through life like a book with no covers.
“Control” is a club song playing through the lens of the chronic second guesser, contemplating the concept of gaining something out of losing control. On the other hand, “Don’t Be A Stranger” expresses a desire to maintain communication, and “Full Well” is an audible cry for help. Each of these songs reaches out in its unique way, refusing to give an inch while keeping the other in mind.
