Letters to Cleo is an American rock band. The current lineup of the group consists of Stacey Jones (drums and percussion), Joe Klompus (bass and backing vocals), Michael Eisenstein (backing vocals, keyboards, and rhythm guitar), Greg McKenna (lead guitar and backing vocals), and Kay Hanley (lead vocals and rhythm guitar). Letters to Cleo was created in 1990 by guitarist Greg McKenna and singer Kay Hanley. Rebecca Lula was the band's original name, which featured Tad Bouve on guitar and Ted Garland on drums, with numerous players filling in on bass.
T.T. the Bear's Place and The Rathskellar were among the Boston clubs where Letters to Cleo performed. Aurora Gory Alice, their first full-length album, was released in 1993 on CherryDisc Records. Letters to Cleo acquired a major label record deal with Giant Records, a Warner Brothers subsidiary. Aurora Gory Alice was re-released globally following substantial radio in the New England region and a much-hyped appearance at South by Southwest in Austin.
With "Here & Now," the band scored their first huge hit single, which garnered more attention as part of the Melrose Place soundtrack. On the Billboard Modern Rock Singles list, the song reached No. 10. Wholesale Meats and Fish, Letters to Cleo's follow-up album, was released in 1995. Following its release, tours with Our Lady Peace, Sponge, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, and other artists were organized.
