Leroy Van Dyke Information
Van Dyke's birthplace was Mora, Missouri. He grew up in Spencer, Wisconsin, before moving to Columbia, Missouri, where he earned a degree in agricultural journalism. In 1956, he and Buddy Black wrote "The Auctioneer," a country hit that would sell over 2.5 million copies. His cousin Ray Sims, a Missourian inducted into the National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame, inspired the song.
Van Dyke starred as a young country music star in the 1967 film What Am I Bid?, in which Sims portrayed an auctioneer. More than 500 of Van Dyke's compositions have been released throughout his 50-year career, with dozens of them being chart successes. By 1994, "Walk on By" (1961) from his album had become the best-selling, most-played, and longest-charting country single of all time, as determined by Billboard magazine.
For 19 consecutive weeks, it topped the country music charts in the United States and spent 42 weeks in the top 100 overall, peaking at number five on the pop charts. One and a half million copies were sold. In the late '50s, he was a regular on Ozark Jubilee, and for ten years, he and Bill Mack hosted the radio program Country Crossroads for the Southern Baptist Radio/TV Commission. Jerry Clower later joined the show as a co-host.
