Leonidas Kavakos Information
Leonidas Kavakos (October 30, 1967) is a Greek conductor and violinist. He was born in Athens in a musical family. Kavakos learned to play the violin at the age of five. He later enrolled in the Hellenic Conservatory, studying along with Stelios Kafantaris. Kavakos got a scholarship from Onassis Foundation that enabled him to attend masterclasses at Indiana University with Josef Gingold. In 1984, Kavakos made his concert debut at the Athens Festival. He won his first competition in 1985 when he participated in the International Sibelius Competition.
In 1986, Kavakos made his United States debut. The very next year, he also gave recitals at different venues across the country. After that, Kavakos began working extensively in major concert halls across the continent. He worked with various world-class orchestras such as Vienna Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and Berlin Philharmonic. So far in his career, Kavakos has performed at festivals such as the Stars of White Nights Festival, Lucerne Festival, Salzburg Festival, Verbier Festival.
In 1988, Kavakos made a highly successful Japanese debut tour where he played recitals at Casals Hall of Tokyo. Since then, he has been touring Japan with the English Chamber Orchestra. Starting in 1992, Kavakos has appeared throughout the United Kingdom along with many orchestras.
In 2001, Kavakos was announced principal guest artist of the Camerata Salzburg. He performed with them as a conductor and soloist. He is also a keen chamber music performer. Kavakos was invited to perform at the 42nd Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2014.
