Lauryn Hill Information
Lauryn Noelle Hill (May 26, 1975) is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. She was born in East Orange, New Jersey. Hill was famous for being a part of the Fugees. Hill's formative musical inspirations were Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Gladys Knight, and Aretha Franklin. She competed on Amateur Night on "Showtime at the Apollo." She also participated in track and cheer at Columbia High School, where she was a student.
Hill started as an actor when she was a teenager. She also acted in the off-Broadway production Club XII with MC Lyte and appeared in the 1991 serial series As the World Turns. She was praised for portraying Rita in the 1993 sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. Later, she was featured on Nas's "If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)". The Fugees broke up in 1997. Afterward, she sang "A Rose Is Still a Rose" with Aretha Franklin.
In April of 2016, Hill kicked off the first-ever Diaspora Calling! Festival at Brooklyn's Kings Theatre. Various artists and musicians from the African diaspora, such as the Brooklyn-based Rara band Brother High Full Tempo, were given a platform to share their work during the event.
Hill's "Guarding the Gates" was included in the 2019 film Queen & Slim; she just released a studio recording of the song. Before she recorded it for the film, she had been performing this song live for years. Queen & Slim: The Soundtrack has this tune.
