La Traviata Information

La Traviata, or The Fallen Woman, is a three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi based on a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. Alexandre Dumas Fils's play La Dame aux camélias (1852) is based on the novel of the same name, published in 1848. Violetta, after the heroine, was the initial title of the opera. On March 6, 1853, it performed at Venice's La Fenice opera venue.

On December 6, 1856, the Théâtre-Italien performed the opera in Italian at the Salle Ventadour in Paris. On October 27, 1864, the title role was sung by Christina Nilsson at the Théâtre Lyrique on the Place du Châtelet in a French adaptation by Édouard Duprez, the older brother of tenor Gilbert Duprez. In 1865, the French translation of the libretto was released.

Soprano Fanny Salvini-Donatelli was cast in the lead part of Violetta, which led to some jeers from the audience at the premiere. Even though she had a stellar singing career, the producers felt she was too overweight and too elderly (38 years old) to convincingly portray a young woman whose life is in danger from consumption.

The officials at La Fenice were anxious that the opera be set in the past, namely "c. 1700," although Piave and Verdi wanted to do what Dumas did and set the opera in a modern setting. The composer and librettist's initial intentions were not realized until the 1880s with the staging of "realistic" performances. La Traviata is one of the most often performed operas due to its enormous popularity.
