Mohandas Dewese (August 8, 1962) is an American actor, rapper, and songwriter. He was born in Manhattan, New York City. He is professionally known by his stage name, Kool Moe Dee. The first significant rap fight featured Kool Moe Dee as a participant. After one of Busy Bee's 1981 concerts, he unleashed a lyrical assault on the rapper. A major source of his ire was Busy Bee's boasting that no other MC could defeat him in a battle.
He struck out in 1986, releasing a self-titled album that peaked at number 83 on the Billboard 200. Kool Moe Dee left Sugar Hill Records to join Lavaba Mallison, Robert "Gusto" Wells, Greg Marius, and up-and-coming producer Teddy Riley at the newly founded ROOFTOP Records after meeting Mallison, a young up-and-coming artist at Sugar Hill Records. He worked with the young producers Teddy Riley and Lavaba Mallison, who were instrumental in the rise of the new jack swing genre.
Kool Moe Dee's second album, How Ya Like Me Now, was certified platinum and became his most successful album commercially. In 1989, he released his third album, Knowledge Is King, which became a commercial success. In 1990, he appeared alongside fellow rappers Melle Mel, Big Daddy Kane, and Ice-T on Quincy Jones' Back on the Block album.
