KMFDM Information
At the opening of an exhibition of young European artists at the Grand Palais on February 29, 1984, Sascha Konietzko and German painter and multimedia artist Udo Sturm formally launched KMFDM as a performance art project. The initial performance featured Sturm on an ARP 2600 synthesizer, Konietzko on bass guitars with amplifiers placed strategically throughout the building, and four Polish coal miners (whom Konietzko had met in a bordello) banging on the Grand Palais's foundations.
Opium, the band's debut record, was released on cassette in 1984 and quickly became a staple in the city's seedy nightlife. What Do You Know, Deutschland? was KMFDM's second album, released in December 1986. It was recorded between 1983 and 1986, with certain tracks recorded by Konietzko and Watts before Esch joined the band or the band even existed.
In 1989, KMFDM recorded and released UAIOE for distribution in the United States and Europe. On December 16, 1989, the band landed in the United States for the first time. During their first tour of the United States, members of KMFDM began adopting the phrase "Kill Motherfucking Depeche Mode" as the initialism to mock non-German-speaking media.
