Katherine Jenkins Information
Katherine Jenkins (June 29, 1980) is a Welsh singer. She was born in Neath, Wales. She excelled in school and performed in plays like "Guys and Dolls" and "Calamity Jane," earning all A's. Thanks to her time studying with John Hugh Thomas, she received an A+ in singing and piano on her Grade 8 exams. Selwyn, her father, was 23 years older than her mother and had retired early to care for the family after she went back to work. He died of lung cancer when Jenkins was 15 years old.
Jenkins participated with the Cathedral Singers of the Royal School of Church Music from 1991 to 1996. In that time, she earned the St. Cecilia Award, the highest honor the RSCM bestows upon its female choristers. She also sang for three years with the National Youth Choir of Wales, took first place twice in the BBC Radio 2 Welsh Choirgirl of the Year event, and took home the top prize at the BET Welsh Choirgirl of the Year competition. In addition, she received the Pelenna Valley Male Voice Choir Scholarship, given to the most talented young performer in the choir's annual competition. She got a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music when she was 17 and studied there till she graduated with high honors and a certificate to teach music.
Between 2004 and 2008, over 4 million copies of six of Jenkins' seven studio albums were purchased in the United Kingdom alone. She became the first British classical crossover artist to have two number-one albums in the same year after her debut album, Premiere, made her the fastest-selling mezzo-soprano.
