Roberta Joan "Joni" Mitchell CC (November 7, 1943) is a multi-instrumentalist, painter, singer-songwriter, and Canadian-American. Mitchell, a leading figure in the folk music scene of the 1960s, was renowned for her introspective lyrics and unorthodox songs that eventually included jazz and pop influences. Among her numerous honors are eleven Grammys.
Mitchell got her start singing in little bars in western Canada, including Saskatoon, before making it big in Toronto. In 1965, she uprooted her life and started traveling the US. In 1968, she signed with Reprise Records and made her debut album, Song to a Seagull, after having several original songs sung by other folk singers.
The Joni Mitchell Archives, an endeavor to release a great deal of unreleased material from her lengthy career, culminated in a string of retrospective collections issued at that time. In 2021, she made a triumphant return to the public eye, earning many accolades—among them, a Kennedy Center Honor—in person.
Following an unscheduled performance at the Newport Folk Festival in June 2022, Mitchell returned to live performance and has since made further performances, culminating in a headline performance in 2023. At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024, Mitchell made her performing debut. On October 19th and 20th, 2024, Mitchell will headline two shows at the Hollywood Bowl, co-headlining alongside Brandi Carlile and other special guests.
