Jonas Kaufmann Information
Jonas Kaufmann (July 10, 1969) is a German operatic tenor. Kaufmann was born in the German city of Munich. He began studying the piano at eight and sang in the elementary school choir. Despite studying for mathematics admission examinations, he began vocal instruction at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich in 1989. He sang various minor roles at the Bavarian State Opera while studying. In 1994, he graduated from university with honors in opera and concert performances.
Kaufmann debuted at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken in 1994 and went on to make debuts at the Stuttgart Opera and the Hamburg State Opera in Germany and worldwide debuts at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opéra National de Paris, and La Scala. In 1999, he made his Salzburg Festival debut in a new production of Busoni's Doktor Faust. In 2003, he returned as Belmonte in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail and with the Berlin Philharmonic for concerts of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
Kaufmann received critical acclaim for his performance as Don José in Bizet's Carmen at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata in 2006, partnering with Angela Gheorghiu, to critical acclaim, and reprised the role at the Met in 2007 and 2008, as well as at the Royal Opera House in 2008. He received critical acclaim for his performance as Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca at Covent Garden in May 2008.
