Johnny Rodriguez Information
Johnny Rodriguez is a country music singer from Sabinal, Texas, a small town 90 miles from Mexico. Rodriguez was a good student in school, the captain of his junior high school football team, and an altar boy for his nearby church. However, after his father and eldest brother’s tragic death, Rodriguez became a troubled teen, and he ended up in jail at the age of 8.
Rodriguez used to sing frequently in the cell and was overheard by Texas Ranger Joaquin Jackson. He told “Happy” Shahan about Rodriguez, who later hired him to perform at the Alamo Village, a local tourist attraction. Rodriguez also attracted the attention of country singers Tom T. Hall and Bobby Bare. The two encouraged him to move to Nashville, Tennessee, for a bright future.
Rodriguez arrived in Nashville as a singer with two years experience, a guitar in his hand, and $14 in his pocket. Soon he got in touch with Hall, who found work for Rodriguez as a frontman in his band. Later, he enjoyed an audition with the Mercury Records’ Nashville division and signed a contract.
“Pass Me By” was the first single by Rodriguez released on Mercury in 1972. Some of his other notable singles are “You Always Come Back (To Hurting Me)”, “That’s the Way Love Goes”, and “I Just Can’t Get Her Out of My Mind.”
Rodriguez was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and honored by three U.S. presidents. He also received the Institute of Hispanic Culture Pioneer Award on October 23, 2010.
