John Driskell Hopkins Information
John Driskell Hopkins (May 3, 1971) is a Grammy-winning American musician who rose to fame as a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer with the Zac Brown Band. The third song, "Toes," from the Zac Brown Band's 2008 major-label debut, The Foundation, was co-written by Hopkins, Zac Brown, Wyatt Durette, and Shawn Mullins. It was the group's second top-charting hit.
The band's third album, Uncaged, was released on a major label, and Hopkins was a co-writer on the song "Goodbye in Her Eyes" alongside Zac Brown, Wyatt Durette, and Sonia Leigh. Featuring Chris Cornell, "Heavy Is the Head" was the second single off the band's fourth major-label studio album, 2015's Jekyll + Hyde, and Hopkins co-wrote the song. The album became the band's first number-one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
Hopkins migrated to Atlanta after finishing college. He created the rock band Brighter Shade in 1996 and continues to play with them. In the early 2000s, Brighter Shade had already released two albums.
During that period, Hopkins became active in the production side of things, working on several projects in the Atlanta region as a producer, recorder, and collaborator (including a collaboration with Zac Brown).
Hopkins began performing with the Zac Brown Band in 2005, contributing vocals and bass guitar. Hopkins collaborated with Balsam Range, a bluegrass band, in 2011. Daylight, their debut CD, was released to widespread acclaim in January 2013.
