Joan Elizabeth Osborne is an American interpreter of music, songwriter, and singer. She was born in Anchorage, Kentucky, a suburb of Louisville. In the late 1980s, Osborne moved to New York to attend New York University, where she studied filmmaking. While Osborne was studying, she took classes with legendary documentarian George Stoney.
Once, she sang at an open mic night at the Abilene Café. She ended up performing there by chance nut other musicians praised her talent and encouraged her to return, so she began performing at Abilene’s open mic regularly as well as at other blues open mics in New York City.
Osborne formed her record label in 1991 named Womanly Hips and released her debut full-length album entitled “Soul Show: Live at Delta 88.” She began touring around the Northeast to promote her first album and built a devoted regional following. Her first major-label album, Relish, came out after signing a record deal with Rick Chertoff of Mercury Records.
In 1997, Osborne was a co-headliner for the Lilith Fair. She produced an album for her friends, the Holmes Brothers, in 2001, and has worked with different big record labels, including Blue Gorilla/Polydor, Mercury Records, Interscope Records, PolyGram, and Universal Music. Some of her notable studio albums released so far include Early Recordings, Trouble and Strife, Songs of Bob Dylan, Love and Hate, and Bring It On Home.
