Jenny Hval Information
Jenny Hval (July 11, 1980) is a Norwegian novelist, musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. She was born in Tvedestrand, Norway. Hval was the lead singer of the gothic metal band Shellyz Raven, until 1999. She attended the University of Melbourne in Australia, focusing on her writing and acting skills. While at school, she was the lead singer for the Australian bands iPanic and Folding For Air, and their 2004 EP, Are You Afraid of Heights? was produced by Thomas McGowan.
After returning to Norway, she recorded her debut EP, Cigars, in 2006, for which she received a nomination for the "best newcomer" Spellemannprisen (the Norwegian Grammy Awards). Under her new stage moniker, Rockettothesky, she recorded two albums for Trust Me Records: To Sing You Apple Trees (2006) and Medea (2008).
Once Medea was published, she resumed using her real name publicly. Viscera (2011) and Innocence Is Kinky (2013) were both released after she signed with Rune Grammofon (2013). Her third studio album, Apocalypse, Girl, came out in 2015 on Sacred Bones Records out of New York. Her solo work has been called experimental folk music, art-pop, and avant-garde. She and Lasse Marhaug worked together on the 2016 album Blood Bitch. A 2017 Phonofile Nordic Music Prize was given to the album for its outstanding contribution to Nordic music.
