Jean-Michel Blais (1984) is a pianist and composer. He was born in Nicolet, Quebec. His parents affected his musical tastes as a child. While none of his parents were professional musicians, his father sang in a choir as a child, and his mother played the organ. He began taking piano lessons as a youth and went on to study at the Trois-Rivières Music Conservatory. However, he soon found the academic world of music tiring and confining, so he quit after two years.
Blais gradually regained his love of improvising and composing while working in special education. For two years, Blais worked on his debut album, Il. It was recorded in Blais' apartment with a Zoom recorder over two days, allowing the mood of his home to come through in the recording. Blais corresponded with his buddy Devon Bate, credited on the album as BUFFALO, to mix the album. The music has been recorded so that the listener feels engulfed by it.
Blais' third album, Eviction Sessions, was released on November 30, 2018, through Arts & Crafts. Blais was motivated to create Eviction Sessions after learning that he might be evicted from the apartment where he had lived for the past seven years owing to gentrification in his Montreal neighborhood.
