Janelle Monae (December 1, 1985) is a singer, songwriter, and rapper from Kansas City, Kansas. Monáe started her professional music career with her debut release of a demo CD named The Audition in 2003. She formally debuted in 2007 by releasing her concept EP Metropolis, "Suite I (The Chase)." "The ArchAndroid," Monáe's debut full-length studio album, was released in 2010 by Bad Boy Records. The record was an ideas-based album and the follow-up to her last EP, and it reached No. 2 on the Top Heatseekers list in the United States.
The RIAA Diamond hit "We Are Young" by Fun, which included Monáe as a guest vocalist, climbed the charts in over ten countries and exposed Monáe to a new audience. Her second studio album, Metropolis, debuted at No.5 on the Billboard 200 and included tracks four and five from the seven-part concept series.
She has since appeared in the films Harriet (2019), Glass Onion (2022), and Homecoming (2020). For her performance in the TV series "We the People," she received her first Children's and Family Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Form Program in 2022.
Monáe released the single "Float" on February 16, 2023, including horns by Seun Kuti's band, Egypt 80. She announced on May 11 that her fourth album, The Age of Pleasure, will be released on June 9.
