Isabelle Demers Information
Isabelle Demers (1982) is a Quebec concert organist. She was born in Lachine, Quebec. Demers' first piano teacher was Mrs. France David, whom she started working with when she was six. She began studying piano with Madeleine Bélanger and Raoul Sosa at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec à Montréal when she was 11 years old. At 16, she began taking private organ instruction from Yves Garand. In addition to her keyboard studies the following year, she also kept up her organ studies with Jean Le Buis and Régis Rousseau. In the spring of 2003, she participated in a keyboard and organ competition.
Many awards were bestowed upon her during her time at the Conservatory; among them was the runner-up reward at the 2000 Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition. She has been awarded scholarships from the McAbbie and Wilfrid Pelletier Foundations for her academic excellence.
The Canada Council for the Arts awarded her funding in 2003 so that she could spend a year studying piano at the École Normale de Musique in Paris. After deciding to focus solely on the organ, she auditioned for a master's degree program at New York's prestigious Juilliard School that same year. She enrolled in Mr. Jacobs's class, which Mr. Paul was teaching. She and her classmates Daniel Sullivan, Chelsea Chen, and Cameron Carpenter finished in 2006. In 2006, she was given a Godfrey Hewitt Fellowship.
