Isabel Bayrakdarian Information
Isabel Bayrakdarian (February 1, 1974) is a Lebanese-born Canadian operatic soprano of Armenian descent. Bayrakdarian earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in Biomedical Engineering with high honors from the University of Toronto in 1997. After being the first-ever winner of the Marilyn Horne Foundation Vocal Competition, she enrolled at the Music Academy of the West that summer of 1998.
Bayrakdarian has taken a novel route in her professional life, and she is acclaimed for her charisma onstage as much as her musical talent. Since taking first place in Plácido Domingo's Operalia International Opera Competition in 2000, she has performed at major opera houses worldwide, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, La Scala, and the Paris Opera. The movie A Long Journey Home follows Bayrakdarian on her first journey to Armenia.
In October 2008, Bayrakdarian embarked on a massive North American tour showcasing the music of Komitas Vardapet. The trip included stops at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall in New York and Toronto, San Francisco, Orange County, Vancouver, and Toronto. Anne Manson led the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra that performed with her. The International Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies funded this Memorial Tour in honor of the victims of all genocides (a division of Zoryan Institute).
