Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Information
The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) is a professional orchestra in Indianapolis, Indiana, performing classical music. The orchestra is housed at the Hilbert Circle Theatre on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana's largest performing arts organization. With the support of Leonard A. Strauss, the orchestra was created in 1930 by Ferdinand Schaefer, a local violin professor. Strauss became the ISO's first president. As the orchestra's first music director, Fabien Sevitzky, was hired in 1937, the musicians became fully professional, earning a weekly stipend for a 20-week season. In the 1940s and early 1950s, the orchestra quickly rose to national prominence, releasing a series of phonograph records on RCA Victor and Capitol Records. Reissues of some of the orchestra's early recordings have been made.
Izler Solomon was named music director in 1956. The orchestra went on tour around the country and performed a series of worldwide homage concerts. A US State Department Award was given to this series. Clowes Hall on Butler University's campus and Caleb Mills Hall were the sites where the orchestra performed. In 1976, John Nelson was named music director. The orchestra moved to the restored Hilbert Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis during his tenure, which reopened on October 12, 1984. Nelson revived the ISO with NPR and PBS broadcasts and concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center in 1989 and 1991. With concertmaster Hidetaro Suzuki, he led the orchestra on its first-ever foreign tour in Germany in 1987.
