Illinois Symphony Orchestra Information
The Illinois Symphony Orchestra is the largest professional orchestra in central Illinois. It attracts over 35,000 listeners annually to its symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra, and Concerts for Kids series in Bloomington-Normal, Springfield, and the surrounding area. The Orchestra's music education and outreach programs include guest artist residencies and musician and ensemble performances at middle schools, high schools, universities, community organizations, and senior centers, in addition to serving pre-K and elementary schools through the Itsy Arts and Music Matters education programs.
The Around the Town Chamber Music Series and the Sunday at Six Recital Series are among the popular offerings of the ISO. About $1.3 million is allocated annually to the Illinois Symphony Orchestra. In the early 1970s, parents, music teachers, and musicians in Springfield and the surrounding communities banded together to form the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony (SVYS) in response to eliminating school orchestra programs.
Over 150 young musicians are enrolled in the Illinois Symphony Youth Orchestras (ISYO) programs, including Starter and Junior Strings, Preparatory Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra. The ISO also has a PEACE connection with the UIS-School of Music and the Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts and School of Music at Illinois State University.
