Houston Symphony Information

The Houston Symphony is a Houston-based orchestra that performed its first concert on June 21, 1913. Ima Hogg, a Houston philanthropist, sponsored the show. The symphony was initially composed of 35 part-time musicians, which increased gradually. It has been performing at the Jesse H. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts located in downtown Houston. Julien Paul Blitz was the first conductor of the orchestra through 1916.

The Houston Symphony disbanded in 1918 and reformed later in 1930. It performed its first full season of concerts the same year under Uriel Nespoli. Until Jesse H. Jones Hall's construction for the Performing Arts in 1966, the symphony performed in either the Music Hall or the City Auditorium. When Tropical Storm Allison flooded the building in 2001, the orchestra devastatingly lost millions of dollars worth of instruments, archives, and music.

Some of the notable music directors who served the Houston Symphony include Frank St. Leger (1932–1935), Ernst Hoffmann (1936–1947), Leopold Stokowski (1955–1961), Lawrence Foster (1971–1979), Sergiu Comissiona (1980–1988), Christoph Eschenbach (1988–1999), Hans Graf (2001–2013), and Andrés Orozco-Estrada (2014–present). The Houston Symphony earned a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording in January 2018, the orchestra's first win.
