New York radio station Hot 97FM presents the yearly Summer Jam hip-hop festival in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The performance, typically in June, showcases the year's most talked-about hip-hop and R&B performers.
San Francisco radio station KMEL popularized the hip-hop summer festival style with their annual Summer Jam concerts beginning in 1987 and continuing through the 2000s. Each year, KMEL holds a scaled-down variation of the festival. Similarly, after hiring KMEL's Program Director in 1993, KKBT in Los Angeles began hosting the yearly hip-hop concert Summer Jam. As the radio station changed forms, the performance had to end.
Over the years, the event has become a hotbed for drug use and violence. A riot broke out in the stadium parking area during a festival on June 7, 2015. New Jersey State Police say the trouble started when large groups of people without tickets tried to access the stadium by climbing over the fence.
The decision to shut the stadium gates and ask everyone in the parking lot to leave was made at this time. The crowd refused to disperse and instead started hurling objects at the police. The cops showed up in riot gear, with armored vehicles and pepper spray. There were several charges made.
