Hawaii Symphony Orchestra Information
The Hawaii Symphony Orchestra is an American orchestra company. It was formerly known as Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra was founded in 1900, considered one of the second oldest orchestras in the United States west of the Rocky Mountains. Currently, it plays in Honolulu at Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall. The orchestra was housed originally on the slopes of Punchbowl in a clubhouse. The Hawaii Symphony Orchestra operated under the direction of conductor Samuel Wong from 1996 to 2004. Former music directors of the orchestra include JoAnn Falletta (artistic advisor), Donald Johanos, Robert La Marchina, George Barati, and Fritz Hart.
In 2014, the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra launched its popular musicthatPOPS series. Zelda in Concert, Cirque de la Symphonie, Disney in Concert, Broadway music, and more acts were featured in the series. The symphony's directors stated in May 2010 that their goal was to reduce annual spending to $4 million from $8 million previously. The symphony's 40-performance schedule would be halved, with smaller venues and various ticket rates, to fill all seats with paying clients. The deadline for the symphony to file its Chapter 11 plan of reorganization was set for October 15.
The symphony declared in December 2010 that it would be liquidated under Chapter 7 bankruptcy and would cease operations after 110 years. The Symphony Exploratory Committee, a group of Hawaii businesses, launched attempts to restore the symphony in April 2011. The committee purchased the symphony's assets and negotiated a new three-year contract with the musicians, with a new season scheduled to begin in the fall of 2011.
