Garrick Ohlsson Information
Garrick Olof Ohlsson (April 3, 1948) is an American classical piano artist. He was born in Bronxville, New York. At the age of eight, Ohlsson began to study piano at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, and at 13, he had begun studying at the Juilliard School. His musical teachers who influenced Ohlsson the most include Irma Wolpe, Claudio Arrau, Rosina Lhevinne, Sascha Gorodnitzki, Olga Barabini, and Tom Lishman. He is known for his performances of Schubert, Liszt, Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin.
Ohlsson started his professional career in North America with multiple symphony orchestras of Berkeley, Washington D.C., Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Charlotte, and Atlanta. Ohlsson is also known for his exceptional keyboard stretch. He appeared as a performing guest on The Dick Cavett Show by ABC on November 14, 1971.
In 1966, Ohlsson won the first prize in Ferrucio Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano. In 1968, he won the first prize in Montreal Piano Competition. Other prizes include Grammy Award (2008), Avery Fisher Prize (1994), and Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance (2014).
Throughout his career, Ohlsson recorded with multiple recording labels such as Connoisseur Society, EMI Classics, Telarc, Nonesuch Records, Hyperion Records, Hanssler Classic, Delos International, Decca, BMG, Bridge Records, Angel Records, RCA Red Seal Records, and Arabesque Recordings.
