Gabriela Montero Information
Gabriela Montero (May 10, 1970) is a Venezuelan pianist. She was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Her parents first heard her playing a piece on the toy piano when she was 15 months old. She was three months old before she could talk, but she already knew the National Anthem by heart.
At the tender age of four, Montero began taking piano lessons, and by the time she was five, she had already performed in front of an audience. At age eight, she made her concerto debut at the National Theater in Caracas, playing the Haydn D Major Piano Concerto with the Orquesta Nacional Juvenil de Venezuela (National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela) under the baton of José Antonio Abreu. She was nine years old when she won a government scholarship to attend school in the United States. From 1990 to 1993, she studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
In 1995, she earned third prize in the XIII International Chopin Piano Competition. Montero's first CD release included one disc of music by Rachmaninov, Chopin, and Liszt and a second of improvisations. Her CD, Bach, and Beyond, which features improvised versions of Bach themes, was a bestseller for a long time. Baroque, her follow-up recording of improvisations, was released in February 2008 and was met with 5-star ratings from BBC Music Magazine and Classic FM.
