Gabriel Kahane Information
Gabriel Kahane (July 10, 1981) is an American singer, songwriter, and composer. He was born in Venice Beach, California. He started at the New England Conservatory but eventually transferred to Brown, where he completed his undergraduate degree in music and composed his first musical. Kahane's music has been compared to that of Sufjan Stevens and Rufus Wainwright, and he has even worked with both.
In 2008, Kahane released an album titled Gabriel Kahane on Family Records. Kahane's second singer-songwriter album, Where Are The Arms, was released in September 2011 on StorySound Records. Many of his regular bandmates participated in the recording process, including violinist/guitarist Rob Moose, drummer Matt Johnson, and multi-instrumentalist/mixer/producer Casey Foubert. On his subsequent album, The Ambassador, he enlisted the help of these same three musicians.
The Ambassador, his 2014 album, features songs written from the points of view of both actual and fictional persons who live at each of the album's ten Los Angeles residences. Kahane wrote an article for The New Yorker about his musical exploration of Los Angeles, and Rolling Stone, Vogue, and Paste all highlighted the CD. Kahane's most well-known work is the song cycle Craigslistlieder, originally performed in 2002 and reissued in 2008 by the independent record company Family Records.
