Frank Black (1993) maintained his rowdy, lo-fi surf rock band, peaking at No.9 in the UK charts. Before Black Letter Days (2002) and the praised Nashville album Honeycomb (2005), he fixated on sci-fi and UFOs on The Cult Of Ray (1996). More rootsy Americana, country, and folk tunes were explored in later years.
With their landmark albums Surfa Rosa (1988) and Doolittle (1989), Kurt Cobain, one of the most powerful bands of the late 1980s, grew to love The Pixies for their strange and fantastic outsider alternative music style. After The Pixies disbanded in 1992, Bostonian Charles Thompson became Frank Black. He grew up listening to 1960s beat groups and religious preachers before finding punk and avant-garde movies in his teens.
Black then paid homage to iconic Dutch musician and artist Herman Brood on Bluefinger (2007), which was later converted into a rock opera. He then founded the electro-rock group Grand Duchy with his wife, Violet Clark. The Pixies revived in 2004. Still, his love of the three-minute pop song remained his constant reference point and cornerstone of work despite all the unusual, eccentric genres, screaming, distorted guitars, and art house craziness.
