Florida Orchestra Information
Performing in the greater Tampa Bay, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg area is the American orchestra known as the Florida Orchestra. In 1968, the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and the Tampa Philharmonic merged to become what is now known as the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony. In 1984, the current name was officially accepted. Every year, the Florida Orchestra performs around one hundred concerts. "Coffee Concerts," "Rock Concerts," "Tampa Bay Times Masterworks," "Pops in the Park," and the free "Youth Concerts" are all part of the series.
Former principal pops conductors of the orchestra include Skitch Henderson (1987–2000) and Richard Kaufman (2004–2009). The orchestra announced in June 2012 that Jeff Tyzik would be taking over as principal pops conductor for the 2012–2013 season. Tyzik's initial contract was for three years. Additionally, beginning with the 2012–2013 season, Stuart Malina was designated orchestra's principal guest conductor in June 2012.
Classical composer Frederick Delius, whose work was shaped by Florida, was included on the orchestra's 2012 fall Naxos CD release. Baritone Leon Williams performs with the Florida Orchestra and the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay in a performance of Sea Drift and Appalachia, two works by Delius. The band's 2014 album, Holiday Pops Live!, was the second release from TFO Live!
