Fifth House Ensemble Information
Fifth House Ensemble is a music group based in Chicago, Illinois. It has been praised by The New York Times for its conviction, authority, and delicacy. All these things result from using the power of ensemble performing to venture into uncharted areas of classical music. This organization's cultural, educational, and civic initiatives have allowed it to collaborate with theater companies, video game designers, business entrepreneurs, and folk bands, all of whom tell stories as varied as the communities they serve.
Through the lens of First Peoples-inspired music, this program explores the issue of what it might mean to return to a sacred conception in which humans are not separate from nature but rather an integral component of it. The concert will feature a new commission by Patrick O'Malley, an alumnus of the Fresh Inc Festival, inspired by ecological statistics from Friends of the Chicago River, as well as a new commission by Shawn Okpebholo, who turns water into a musical instrument to honor its value as a scarce resource.
During the 2019-2020 season, Fifth House Ensemble will collaborate with several local organizations to present public performances, events, and instructional programming centered on the Chicago River, the American Indian Center, Chicago Wilderness, the Sierra Club, and the Center for Neighborhood Technology. Wild Mile and sound artist Beth Ann Fennelly are teaming up to build a sonically responsive floating eco-park, and they plan to host musical work days to celebrate its completion.
