Eun Sun Kim Information
Eun Sun Kim (October 23, 1980) is a South Korean conductor. She is best known as the music director of the San Francisco Opera. Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea. She began playing the piano at four. She initially took an interest in composition. Kim studied music composition at Yonsei University along with Seung-Han Choi. He also encouraged her to develop her interest in conducting. She continued music studies at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. She completed her studies with first prize.
Kim made her professional conducting debut in a staging of La bohème at Oper Frankfurt in 2012. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, Kim made her conducting debut in the United States in September 2017 with the Houston Grand Opera (HGO) in a performance of La Traviata.
In June 2019, Kim made her debut as a conductor with the San Francisco Opera, leading the company's performance of Dvoák's Rusalka. Kim became the next music director of the San Francisco Opera in December 2019, with an initial contract of five years, beginning August 1, 2021. With immediate effect, she assumed the title of music director-designate. Kim is the first female conductor to be appointed as the San Francisco Opera's music director.
