Emily Scott Robinson's American Siren, her debut album for Oh Boy Records, is a call to the wandering, the lonesome, and the hard-of-hearing. Her pure soprano and unique upbringing serve as a vehicle for the elegant collection, which features bluegrass, country, and folk elements.
American Siren is not strictly autobiographical, but it does feature many of the real and significant people she has met along the way. Storytellerically, she shines in "If Trouble Comes a Lookin'," which imagines a meeting between a weak priest and his sad wife in a motel bar in Arkansas. The title track, "Hometown Hero," is a heartfelt ode to her cousin, a soldier who committed suicide. While "Every Day in Faith" is a personal monument to perseverance, "Lost Woman's Prayer" is based on the words of a wise friend she made while traveling overseas.
She originally composed "Old Gods" for a theatrical performance of Macbeth. Now it serves as the album's main track and showcases the siren theme to its best potential with gorgeous three-part female harmonies. In the meantime, "Things You Learn the Hard Way" was finished after she polled her social media followers for appropriate instances. However, she also incorporates aspects of her own life throughout each song. This is especially true with the story of a daydreaming waitress in "Cheap Seats." Robinson penned the song after hearing John Prine and Bonnie Raitt perform at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in 2019.
