Dom Flemons Information
Dominique Flemons (August 30, 1982) is an American neotraditional country, Piedmont blues, and old-time music singer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter. He was born in Phoenix, Arizona. His love for music began as a child, listening to his parent's record collection and expanding his horizons by listening to Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and Chuck Berry. Following this trail, he discovered the likes of American folk music forefathers Woody Guthrie, Tom Paxton, and Ramblin' Jack Elliott.
Over time, Flemons established himself as a regular fixture on the Arizona street corner music scene. He attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, where he majored in English and competed in two national poetry slams in 2002 and 2003. Flemons was still a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops when he began his solo career. In 2007, he published his first full-length studio album, Dance Tunes Ballads & Blues. A new record by him came out the following year. Flemons's debut album for the label Music Maker was titled American Songster. After that, his performance at the Newport Folk Festival was broadcast on NPR.
In the past decade, Flemons has given solo performances at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall (for a tribute to Lead Belly), the Cecil Sharp House, the Grand Ole Opry, the opening ceremonies of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, and as the United States representative at the 2017 Rainforest World Music Festival in Kuching, Malaysia.
